Preserved in some pioneer cemeteries deep in rural Illinois are some of the last fragments of the “sea of grass” that greeted pioneers and used to cover 20+ million acres of the Prairie State. The survival of these never-plowed patches to the present day is nothing short of miraculous, and forms a precious link with our past. Join local people at one of these special sites, to gather rare seed, cut brush that shades out prairie plants, prepare for a prescribed burn, and think about nature‘s future in Illinois – and our own.
